SynopsisFrom coffee to dry cleaning and all the important moments in my executives’ lives, I was the go-to girl at McAllen Enterprises—a title I loved eleven months out of the year. But by the time Valentine’s Day rolled around, I was over the gifts, cards, flowers, dinners, and most of all, personal shopping. Goodreads
ExcerptHis blue eyes nearly knocked me out of the chair when they met mine. They were warm and deep and full of…something I didn’t want to identify. “I’m not sure. It’s still pretty fresh.” He twirled the pen between his fingers. “Gram had told me that I was her sole beneficiary, but that didn’t really mean much when she was living. Now…I don’t know what it means. Thankfully, I’m in a place where I don’t have to choose right now. I’m working insane hours, but I can do my job as a CPA here while the other employees carry the floral load.” “Oh, wow. I hadn’t even thought about the fact that it’s tax time. You must be dying.” His lip turned up in a quirky grin that made my core heat. I clenched my thighs together to alleviate the pressure and hoped like hell he hadn’t seen the heat rise in my cheeks. “Long hours, but I’ll survive.” Gavin’s gaze dropped to my lips, and I forced myself to stop looking at him. This man was dangerous in more ways than one. He had the power to make or break the wives’ and the excutives’ Valentine’s Day, but he also had the ability to play with my heartstrings, and I didn’t like that in the least. Gavin didn’t seem like the playboy type. I mean, what CPA would? But damn if he didn’t look like one. He had the markings of a man who could have any woman he wanted, but I didn’t sense that from his personality. I’d been wrong before. “I have an idea.” He paused, waiting for me to look up. “It might make you feel a little better about this whole Lauren thing.” Mischief swirled in the oceans of blue that threatened to drown me. “What’s that?” “What are your thoughts on Naked Ladies and Wolf’s Bane?” I cocked my head to the side, wondering if someone had hit him on the head as a baby. “Well, I’m straight, so nude women aren’t really my thing—” His laugh burst from his mouth and filled the room. It was as warm as I imagined his arms to be. “They’re flowers, Analiese.” Well, I felt like an idiot. “Poisonous flowers.” I rolled my eyes and faced him with a look that should have felt like a smack on the cheek. “I’m not trying to kill the woman, Gavin.” “Well, unless she eats the arrangement, she has nothing to worry about.” He shrugged and leaned back in Violet’s chair. “There are tons of poisonous flowers used in bouquets all the time. Peace lilies are a prime example.” I had no idea, not that I’d ever thought about it because Gavin was right. I didn’t plan to ingest flowers that I’d received or bought. “Really?” Maybe Gavin knew more about this flower gig than I’d originally thought. “Yeah. It’s a way that you can pay homage to what she is to your boss without actually saying it. Just thought it might make you feel a little better about your role in it.”
