Lucky in Love.
Thatâs the name of the dating app I picked, hoping to find Mr. Better Than Average so I can hold off planning my future as a cat lady.
Iâve been distracted eyeballing a tall, dark, and handsome Latin hottie who works in the library with me. He is way out of my league, and a woman has needs if you know what I mean.
Finding a man shouldnât be hard when all I have to do is swipe left or right. Itâll weed out the slimy men who have Bad Date written all over them.
Yeah, Iâm learning quickly that Iâm rather unlucky in love after all. The men I pick need warning labels, kissing lessons, and a good talking-to about manners.
Should I throw in the towel or will this series of bad dates be exactly what I need to win Mr. Right?

Pouring milk into my mug, I watch the black and white colors swirl together until they turn a pretty caramel. I didnât sleep well, and the creamy mix is exactly what the doctor ordered. Hurrying, I flick the sugar packet and dump its contents. The door behind me opens as I toss the spoon into the sink and lift the mug to my lips. The satisfying liquid warms my insides, and I canât help my sigh even if I tried.
âRough night?â a velvety voice asks.
I take another sip of my glorious cup of joe before turning toward Mario. He started working in the Reference Department three months ago and has featured in a few of my dirty dreams. Heâs gorgeous and about six feet three inches. Dark, tall, and handsome would describe him to a T.
I shrug and force my mind from the gutter. He brushes past me and grabs the spoon I just discarded. The first time I saw him do this, I yelped in protest, but it seemed he really was another gross college guy.
One with full kissable lips.
âYouâre quiet this morning,â he says and leans against the counter next to me.
After the episode with Tristan last night, I canât help but stare a second longer. âNo, just a date.â The words spill from my mouth. âI mean, I was up late.â
Marioâs mug freezes halfway to his lips, and an eyebrow raises as he stares at me.
âFuck!â I slap a hand over my mouth in horror. My heart races, and I know my cheeks are bright pink. âI gotta go.â I squealed and run out of the break room.
Great job, Izzy! Now he thinks you were up all night fucking.
Calling myself a string of insults, I take the elevator down to the copy office. See, we both work in our college library in different departments. I keep the copy machines and printers stocked with paper and toner, and Mario does whatever the students in Reference do.
We both tend to be in the break room grabbing coffee in the mornings at the same time. If Iâm lucky, I get a glimpse of him when I do my rounds. Our conversations arenât long, usually revolving around our mutual love of coffee. His doesnât include milk, but his love of coffee runs as deep as mine.
I walk around the corner and sigh with relief when I find the door closed. My boss, Jerry, isnât in yet, and I know heâll tease me if he spots the blush still on my cheeks. Jerry is old enough to be my dad and is the best boss Iâve had, not that there have been many.
Kicking the doorstop under the wooden door, I prop it open. I set my mug on the long counter and take a quick peek at the staplers and empty the pencil sharpener set out for students to pop in and use. My body goes into autopilot, and Marioâs lips come to mind. I wonder if they are they as soft as they look?
I reluctantly remind myself heâs out of my league. Itâs not that I donât think Iâm pretty. I am, but Iâm not the girl all the boys come sniffing around. Theyâll look in my direction, but few take the next step. Of those who do, none are as handsome as Mario.

About THE LAST LETTER (Coming 2/26/2019):
Beckett,
If you’re reading this, well, you know the “last-letter” drill. You made it. I didn’t. Get off the guilt train, because I know if there were any chance you could have saved me, you would have.
I need one thing from you: Get out of the army and get to Telluride.
My little sister Ella’s raising the twins alone. She’s too independent and won’t accept help easily, but she has lost our grandmother, our parents, and now me. It’s too much for anyone to endure. It’s not fair.
And here’s the kicker: there’s something else you don’t know that’s tearing her family apart. She’s going to need help.
So if I’m gone, that means I can’t be there for Ella. I can’t help them through this. But you can. So I’m begging you, as my best friend, go take care of my sister, my family.
Please don’t make her go through it alone.

"I cannot imagine a world without this story." – Hypable"A stunning, emotional romance." - Jill Shalvis, NYT Bestselling Author
“I’m not going anywhere. You need anything, and it’s yours. You need help? You’ve got it.” She let loose a mocking laugh as she descended the steps. “I don’t want or need you here, Mr.…” She opened the door to her SUV and pulled out a paper. “Mr. Gentry.” “Beckett,” I answered, desperate to hear her say it. My real name. “Okay, Mr. Gentry. Enjoy your vacation and then head home, because like I said, I’m not in need of a babysitter or anyone’s charity. I’ve been taking care of myself since Ryan ran off and joined the army after our parents died.” I wanted to grab her, to hold her against my chest and block anything that wanted to harm her. My hands ached to sweep down the line of her back, to take away any of her suffering that she’d let me. I’d known this would be hard, but seeing her wasn’t anything I could have prepared myself for. “It doesn’t matter if you want me, because I’m not here on your wishes. I’m here on Mac’s. This is all he asked of me, so unless you’re going to kick me off your property, I’m going to keep the promise I made.” Her eyes narrowed. “Okay. Anything I need?” “Anything.” “When Ryan died—” No. Anything but this. “—he was on an op, right?” Could she see the blood drain from my face? Because I sure as hell felt it. I heard the rotors. Saw the blood. Reached for his hand as it limply fell off the stretcher. “Yes. It’s classified.” Her hand gripped the open doorframe. “So I’ve heard. I need…” She sighed, looking everywhere but at me for a second before straightening her shoulders and meeting my eyes. “I need to know what happened to Chaos. Was he there? When Ryan died? You were in the same unit, right?” Her throat moved as she swallowed, and her eyes took on a desperate plea. Damn it. She deserved to know everything. That I wasn’t the man I wanted to be, that she needed. That I was the piece of shit who made it back with a beating heart while her brother came home draped in a flag. I needed her to know that I’d chosen to stop answering her letters because I knew that the only thing I could bring her in this life would be more pain. I needed her to know that it was only Ryan’s letter that got me here, and the knowledge that it was the least I could do for my best friend. That I never meant to hurt her, never had the intention of smashing into her life like the wrecking ball I was—not when she lived under such breakable glass. “Well? Was he?” But what I needed didn’t matter. I’ve never been able to give second chances when it comes to hurting the people I love. Letter number six. If I told her those things, she’d shut me out, and I would fail Mac for a second time. I could tell myself that it was her choice, but really, it would be mine. I was the guy people looked for an excuse to get rid of, and truth was a gift-wrapped reason to kick me to the curb. There were two distinct paths ahead of me: the first, where I told her who I was and what had happened, and she promptly walked out of my life, and the second…where I did everything I could to help her, no matter what the cost. Path number two it is. “He was there,” I answered honestly. Her lower lip trembled, and she bit onto it, like any sign of weakness had to be quashed. “And? What happened?” “That’s classified.” I was a bastard, but an honest one. “Classified. You’re all the same, you know that? Loyal as anything to one another and nothing left for anyone else. Just tell me if he’s dead. I deserve to know.” “Knowing what happened to Mac…to Chaos…none of that would do you any good. It would hurt a hell of a lot more than it already does. Trust me.” She scoffed, shaking her head as she rubbed the bridge of her nose. When she looked back up, the fake smile was in place, and those blue eyes had gone glacial. “Welcome to Telluride, Mr. Gentry. I hope you enjoy your stay.” She climbed into the SUV and slammed the door, throwing the vehicle into reverse to get out of the drive. I watched until she disappeared into the thick forest of trees. Havoc brushed against my leg. I looked down at her, and she stared back up at me, no doubt knowing that I was an imbecile for what I’d just let happen. “Yeah, that didn’t go so well.” I looked up at the cloudless Colorado sky. “We did a number on her, Mac. So if you’ve got any pointers on how to win over your sister, I’m all ears.” I opened the tailgate of my truck and started to unload my stuff. It might be temporary, but I was here for as long as Ella would let me stay. Because somewhere between letter number one and letter number twenty-four, I’d fallen in love with her. Fallen for her words, her strength, her insight and kindness, her grace under impossible circumstances, her love for her children, and her determination to stand on her own. I could list a thousand reasons that woman owned whatever heart I had. But none of them mattered because, even though she was the woman I loved, to her, I was just a stranger. An unwelcome one at that. Which was more than I deserved.
"This story gripped me from start to finish. The Last Letter is poignant, heartfelt and utterly consuming. I loved it!" - Mia Sheridan, NYT Bestselling Author

My preach hand is up because L.B. Dunbar's latest was second-chance romance at its finest. The angst and yearning was palpable. The guilt and secrets were thick. And as Denton and Mati learned the hard way, timing is everything. Childhood best friends. Strangers for the past twenty plus years. A looming tragedy brings him back to town with a heart full of regret. And a head full of doubt. Regret for how he left years ago. Doubt that Marti will see past her hurt. The was a longing in both of them. For Denton is was for Marti to see him. As the boy who knew her inside and out. And the man who didn't want to lose this chance but didn't know how to grasp it either. And Marti- she wanted it all. To move forward with her life. With her friend and the man who set her on fire. I kept waiting for the sexual tension to explode and when it did...Can you say hot? Because it was. However, they could never seem to get on the same page. Ugh. I just wanted to lock them in a room and force them to talk to each other. These two who never hid anything from each other until love got in the way. I loved that there were a lot of new characters introduced in this book. Can you say spinoff series? Fingers crossed that L.B. Dunbar runs with this small town because it is ripe for romance. The Tommy and Hank sighting didn't hurt anything either. I'm not going to lie, there is a fair amount of loss and pain in the pages of Second Chance. But there is also so much hope and expectation. Denton and Mati are the proof that it is never too late to open yourself up. To follow your dreams and your heart especially when happiness and love are on the line. About the Author L.B. Dunbar loves the sweeter things in life: cookies, Coca-Cola, and romance. Her reading journey began with a deep love of fairy tales, medieval knights, Regency debauchery, and alpha males. She loves a deep belly laugh and a strong hug. Occasionally, she has the energy of a Jack Russell terrier. Accused—yes, that’s the correct word—of having an overactive imagination, to her benefit, such an imagination works well. Author of over two dozen novels, she’s created sweet, small town worlds; rock star mayhem; MMA chaos; sexy rom-coms for the over 40; and intrigue on an island of redemption. In addition, she is earning a title as the “myth and legend lady” for her modernizations of mythology as elda lore. Her other duties in life include mother to four children and wife to the one and only.

Iâd just straightened up the pile of mats when a scraping sound caught my attention. Raising the blinds, I looked out the window and saw Rachel standing in the middle of the road, shovel in hand, pushing the snow into big piles. Sheâd got about ten feet of road cleared in addition to her car.
Did she really think she could plow the fucking road between here and the highway? It was miles of road!
âSon of a bitch.â I ran out of the room. Three steps later, I almost tripped over Blue in the hallway. Heâd taken up a post between me and the doorway, almost like he couldnât decide who he should be guarding. âHey, boy. You okay?â
Blue sat up with a whine and swung his head toward the front door.
âYeah, I think we gotta talk some sense in her. She canât plow the fucking road all by herself. Come on.â I grabbed my coat next to the door and pulled it on over my naked chest. My shirt was balled up somewhere in Coleâs home gym. I shoved my bare feet into my boots next to the door and half-assedly laced them up. Blue whined next to me, urging me to hurry. I ripped open the door, and Blue bounded out, with me close on his heels.
âWhat the hell are you doing, woman!â I shouted before I met up with Rachel.
She glanced at me then bent down to pet Blue. âWhat does it look like?â
âIt looks like youâre fucking insane. You do know thereâs like five miles of road between us and the highway, right? Are you planning on plowing the whole fucking thing by hand?â
âI have to do something!â Rachel waved an agitated hand as she stood back up to face me. âI canât just sit here and wait for someone to call or show up. I have people waiting on meâmy family is counting on me.â
âYou think I donât know that? You think the same fucking thing isnât happening to me right now? I was supposed to be at work today too. Our scariest fucking client is expecting a bike delivery today, and Iâm not gonna be there to stand between him and my brother. Thatâs my job! Thatâs what Iâve done my whole life, and today Iâm not gonna be there. I wonât be there to protect him.â
Rachel stared back at me with wide eyes, and her mouth opened and closed like a fish.
I sighed as some of my anger melted away at Rachelâs bewilderment.
I hadnât meant to reveal so much. My shit was my shit. No one else needed to know what was really going on in my lifeâleast of all a piece of ass Iâd hooked up with for a night. I just had so much anger pent up. Booze hadnât helped. Exercise hadnât helped. Really the only thing thatâd worked was when I had her naked and under me, but thatâd never happen again.
I needed to get my shit under control.
âLook, Iâm sorry, okay?â I reached over and gently took the snow shovel out of her hands. âWe all have shitâthatâs all Iâm saying. Well, that, and thereâs no way either of us is going to be able to dig our way out of this mess. Thereâs too much road between us and the highway. Itâs dangerous. Weâre better off waiting until the plow comes. I donât know where the hell Coleâs business manager is, but he still hasnât called me back. If youâd like, I can call around and see if I can find another service.â
Rachel bit her lip and looked down the long, snow-covered road, her brow wrinkled.
âIâll even pay.â
Rachelâs eyes shot to mine. âItâs not the money thatâs bothering me. Well, it is, âcause I canât afford it, but Iâm worried about the weather. Thereâs supposed to be another system moving in this afternoon. If we canât get out of here by noon, I doubt youâll find another outfit willing to come out in the middle of another storm. We could be trapped here overnight again.â
I nodded slowly. âIâll get on the horn and see if we can get you home to your little boy sooner than later.â
âThank you.â
