Alex had to double check the address on his phone. This is where Lea suggested for dinner? Aloft was a trendy dim sim bar at the top of a high rise hotel. Alex was shocked that mousy little Lea would even know about a place like this, let alone suggest eating here. Maybe she is trying to impress me, he thought. Wouldn’t be the first time. Thanking his driver, Alex headed into the luxury building. White marble tiles were accented with black onyx stones and there was an actual bellman inside the elevator.
“Are you going to Aloft, sir?” Was it Alex’s imagination, or was the bellman looking at him disdainfully?
“Yes, thank you.”
There were a few moments of awkward silence as the elevator smoothly rose to the top of the building. Alex could see the reflection of the bellman’s face in the mirrored doors as he scanned Alex up and down. If I’d have known we were going to a place like this, I’d have dressed up.
The doors slid open, and it took a moment for Alex’s eyes to adjust to the lighting as he stepped directly into the restaurant. The entire place was a shock of cobalt blue and white, with large illuminated globes overhead that looked like clouds. It literally felt like he had stepped out of an airplane, directly into the sky.
Scanning the room for what he imagined Lea might look like now, he didn’t see anyone familiar. Figuring she might be at the bar, and also realizing that a cold beer would sound really good right about now, Alex headed toward the chrome and glass bar.
Sitting alone at the end of the bar, he saw her. She’d gained a few pounds and had cut her hair short so it kind of frizzed and curled up around her glasses. But, she still wore the same thick glasses and had her face buried in a book. He was glad that she’d suggested such a nice place. It looked like she didn’t get out much.
Sliding into the bar stool next to her, he was a little surprised when she was so engrossed in the book that she didn’t even look up.
“What’s a girl like you doing in a place like this?” he said, charmingly.
Looking up at him, confused, she said, “Excuse me?”
He laughed and kept up the humor. “I mean, the restaurant is beautiful, sure. But we didn’t have to meet halfway across the world just to have dinner.”
The look on her face was not one of amusement, and for a second he wondered if he was losing his charm.
She opened her mouth to speak when Alex felt a tap on his shoulder. “What’s a guy like you doing in a place like this?”
He turned around and saw a breathtakingly gorgeous woman. Reddish brown ringlets framed a perfectly oval face. Eyes the color of coffee twinkled back at him. Plump cherry red lips smiled, revealing perfectly straight white teeth.
“Uhhh…Lea?”
She threw her head back in laughter and embraced him. “Yes!”
Alex looked back at the woman with the book who was now glaring at him. “I...um… I’m sorry, I thought you were someone else…”
The woman slammed her book shut and huffed, “Obviously.” She then grabbed her sweater and large purse and stomped off.
Looking back at Lea, Alex was sure he must be blushing.
“So, that’s what you thought I would look like, is it?” The grin on her face was merciless.
“What?” She caught you there, buddy. “No, no. I was just being…”
Slipping into the seat next to him, she finished his sentence. “Realistic.”
He opened his mouth to reply and she let him off the hook. “No worries, Alex. I have pictures from high school. I know how I looked.”
