I really hope this favor is along the lines of something lame like “hey, water my plants for a week while I’m gone.” Then again, I need it to be a bigger favor than that to negotiate what I need. Or maybe not. He says I owe him, but really, I think he owes me for life. He’s the reason I lost all of my girlfriends. Of course, I never denied the story that we’d slept together, he’d fed Kelsey even though it wasn’t true. It was a shitty choice to get myself in that position, but sex and no sex are totally different outcomes.

Huh. Maybe new me should stop holding this grudge against him. After all, it was my choice to just go with it.

Then again, he was a shitty friend to ask it of me in the first place.

Damn. New me is going to be hard to get along with.

“Holy shit, am I glad to see you,” Tyler says and grabs my hand to help me up. “Let’s get inside.”

The musk scent he wears surrounds me. I try not to look obvious as I take a breath. God, the white shirt he’s unbuttoned at the collar, his tie hanging loose, is a sinful look on him. I can’t even think about the way his gray slacks look over his butt. Junior high and high school Tyler was hot, but grown-up Tyler is bad for my health.

Damn it, Abby.

With another deep breath, I pull myself together and, just for safe measure, I say, “I’ll start by saying I’m swearing off men, so if your favor has anything do with—”

“It doesn’t.” He shakes his head. “You seriously think that’s what I want from you?”

My cheeks warm as I look past him. I mean, why not? But also … thank you.

“Then, what do you need?”

“Let’s go inside first,” he says, brushing off my question. He holds up a plastic grocery bag when I don’t answer.

“What’s that?”

“Back up,” he says with a sly grin.

I reach for the bag, but he jerks it back. “Nope, not till you come inside so we can talk.”

“Tyler …”

“Fine. I guess I’ll just have to eat all these macaroons by myself.”

Damn it. My favorite type of cookie.

“Ugh,” I groan, letting my chin drop as I head for his door.

“Good. I’m hungry, and I want to say this in the correct way so that you say yes.” His voice shakes a little.

“Well, that sounds reassuring,” I grumble and pull up a seat at his kitchen island. Tyler’s house has always been one I admired. It’s three bedrooms and all one floor, which I think is genius. It’s newly remodeled, and even though I enjoy every room, the kitchen is my favorite. I think it’s the slate countertops and pale blue memory foam stools that hooked me.

“Trust me, it isn’t as bad as you think,” he says.
