Penn
They say revenge is a dish best served cold.
Iâd had four years to stew on what Daria Followhill did to me, and now my heart is completely iced.
I took her first kiss.
She took the only thing I loved.
I was poor.
She was rich.
The good thing about circumstances? They can change. Fast.
Now, Iâm her parentsâ latest shiny project.
Her housemate. Her tormentor. The captain of the rival football team she hates so much.
Yeah, baby girl, say itâIâm your foster brother.
Thereâs a price to pay for ruining the only good thing in my life, and sheâs about to shell out some serious tears.
Daria
Everyone loves a good-old, unapologetic punk.
But being a bitch? Oh, you get slammed for every snarky comment, cynical eye roll, and foot you put in your adversariesâ way.
The thing about stiletto heels is that they make a hell of a dent when you walk all over the people who try to hurt you.
In Penn Scullyâs case, I pierced his heart until he bled out, then left it in a trash can on a bright summer day.
Four years ago, he asked me to save all of my firsts for him.
Now he lives across the hall, and thereâs nothing I want more than to be his last everything.
His parting words when he gave me his heart were that nothing in this world is free.
Now? Now he is making me pay.

And do I mean WHOA! Pretty Reckless is high school meets some Real Housewives level of drama. For as much as YA and drama aren't my thing, the way L.K. Shen wrote this made it unputdownable. Daria. I wanted to like her. I really did but for about 70% of the book I didn't. She was bratty, vindictive and petty. But she was also sad, lonely and lost. Especially when her mother, thinking she was doing something right, only added fuel to the fire by having Penn become a permanent fixture in their home. Goodness me- Penn. That boy was full of hate and vinegar. But he was just as broken and just as lonely as Daria. The only difference was he saw that she was hiding and worked his way in. It was high school and hormones and rivalry. The wrong side of the tracks and the princess. It shouldn't have made sense. They hated each other as much as they hated themselves but somehow when Daria and Penn were together all the garbage didn't matter. It was just them, being them. Bleeding out their pain and anger. I loved seeing these two let their guards down, laugh and just be kids. Though those moments were few and far between, it was just the right amount to break up all the heavy and intense emotions. And it was all building to this...the showdown. Cue the nervousness. I loved that Daria took a stand and did what she had to do. So did Penn. Although they were fighting for the same thing, they did it in vastly different ways. And the fallout was going to be HUGE. Nobody was going to be unaffected by it. Everyone, from Daria's parents (yay for Mel and Jamie and a Vic sighting too) to the entire class at All Saints High had something to lose. Pretty Reckless was all about family, friendship and forgiveness. And spun into this wild and twisted ride was a young romance that was profound and changed both Penn and Daria. Hats off to L.J. Shen for making their road twisted and downright hard. But the payoff, the ending, was so sweet and no less than these two warriors deserved.
Excerpt:
âI donât want you transferring into my school,â I hiss out. Melody would gladly file a transfer request, and Principal Prichard would salivate over the chance to snatch him up for our football team. âThat wonât be a problem. You guys suck so much ass, you have shit-breath.â âStill smells better than poverty. Youâre poor, right? Your sister was just bullshitting about being rich.â When someone hits me with a stick, I run over them with a tank. Iâm so mean to him I want to throw up. I hate this part of being me. The striking harder at all costs part. âJust to make things clear.â I put the brush down, batting my lashes. âYouâre not my step-sibling, foster brother, or a part of the family. Youâre a stray dog. Last of the litter, most unlikely to be adopted, and a charity case.â Penn takes a step toward me, and my heart is fighting its way out of my ribcage. The closer he gets, the more I realize that my heart might succeed. Pennâs eyes remind me of a snakeâs. Mesmerizing, but inhuman altogether. They werenât like that before. His scent messes with my head. I want to reach out and caress his face. Kiss his wounds better. Beg for forgiveness. Curse him. Push him away. Cry on his shoulder for what weâve done. For how it ended. For what we became afterwards, because Iâm full of crap and he is totally empty. We ruined ourselves the day of our first kiss. Penn looks down at me. Time stops. It feels like the world is losing gravity, falling into a bottomless depth in space when he clasps my chin with his thumb and finger, lifting my head up. I canât breathe. Iâm not sure I want to, either. My towel drops to the floor with a thud, even though I secured it over my chest. I realize that he tugged at it intentionally. Iâm naked. My body, my soul, my heart. All my walls are down. Somewhere in my head, a red alarm blasts and my inhibitions are getting armed, ready to fight back. Iâm trying to decode his expression. He is amused, irritated, andâ¦playful? The mixture of emotions doesnât make any sense. âMess with me, Followhill, and I will ruin you.â âNot if I ruin you first.â About LJ Shen: L.J.
