Excerpt
Having cancer is an invitation to be touched. Doctors. Nurses. Sympathetic friends. An overbearing mother. For months, I dreaded having someone elseâs hands on my body.
But now? Now I crave it. Especially with Clay staring at me like Iâm the only one who can quench his thirst. Iâd gladly be his water. The glass. Hell, Iâd even be the ice cubes if heâd give me a few hours and a freezer.
âUm, will you tie me?â I give myself ten bonus pointsâfive for speaking coherently and five for omitting the word âupâ at the end.
He smiles and steps behind me, and my skin prickles in anticipation. Even my goose bumps want to be as close to him as possible. But none of that compares to the second his fingers brush the skin on my shoulders. I officially take back every curse word I aimed at Rebecca when I opened my suitcase.
Iâm baking her a cake as soon as I get home.
âIs that too tight?â Clayâs voice is deeper, huskier, and damn if thatâs not the sexiest thing Iâve heard inâ¦ever. I want to say yes, so heâll have to start over, but a girl only has so much self-control. Heâd probably say something like âhow do you want it?â and then Iâd turn around and hump his leg because Iâm all about hands-on demonstrations.
âItâs perfect.â
âGreat. Iâll double-knot it so you can just slip it over your head next time.â
Iâd be sad if it wasnât for the light squeeze he gives my neck when heâs done. Committing that feeling to memory, I pull a tank top over my head and slide my feet into my sneakers, shoving all thoughts of molesting Clay out of my mind. âWhere do you want to go first?â
âShouldnât I be asking you that?â The edges of his mouth tip up.
âYeah, yeah, Iâm the worldâs worst Hawaiian.â I shoot playful daggers at him.
âHey, you said it, not me.â He holds his palms out, proclaiming his innocence. âThankfully, one of us came prepared. I was thinking of a short hike and then maybe some paddle boarding.â
Itâs my turn to lift a hand. âThe hike sounds fine, but one of us did not come prepared for paddle boarding. Unless you donât mind going in circles.â His eyes crinkle as I simulate rowing with my stump.
âDonât worry, this place has two-person paddle boards.â He pulls the keys to our rental Jeep from his pocket and twirls the ring around his finger. âReady?â
