Harmony Brose can't stop fantasizing about her best friend. After a few drinks, she took a risk. She asked Chase to kiss her. It was the best kiss of her life. Until he jumped up and left, breaking her heart. Officer Chase Harvey had thought about kissing Harmony for years but never crossed that line until that night. Fearing Harmony was drunk, he had to cut it off until he was sure she truly wanted him. Apparently she didn't, because Harmony just started dating the new man in town. Chase doesn't have time to waste on regrets. A woman vanished from their small town and he'll do whatever is necessary to solve the case. When evidence points to the new man, Chase must follow the lead. It has nothing at all to do with the fact the man is dating Harmony… Now he has to decide. Is he willing to risk losing the woman he loves in order to protect her?
Chase stood on her doorstep, looking like he hadn’t slept in days.
“What happened to you?” she reached out and stroked his cheek.
His eyes were red-rimmed; his hair looked like he hadn’t combed it.
“Aren’t those the clothes you wore yesterday?”
Then she noticed his hand. His knuckles were cut up and bruised.
Instinctively, she reached for it. “Come with me.”
He followed her inside, kicking the door closed behind him. She led him to her bathroom and instructed him to rinse his hand under the faucet.
“No, that will hurt.”
She quirked her brow. “Officer, you can’t handle a little water on your cut?”
He rolled his eyes and rinsed his knuckles. “Shit, that stings.”
“Sit.” She pointed to the toilet.
He obeyed, and she got to work on his hand. First, she dried it off, then she found some antibiotic cream, and put in on before putting a Band-Aid on each knuckle.
“Fluorescent Band-Aids?” He inspected her handiwork, and even she had to admit, it looked bad. But at least he wouldn’t get infected.
“Yep.” She put her supplies away in one of the drawers under the sink.
“Thank you,” he said.
“What did you punch? And why do you look like you were up all night?”
“I was up all night drinking ’cause the woman I want doesn’t want me. I punched Rance.”
She swore her heart stopped beating. He wanted her?
“The woman you want?”
That’s not what he’d said at Mr. Rodney’s house. But maybe Lauren was right, there had been more.
Using his non-injured hand, he pushed some of her hair behind her ear. “Yeah, I tried to tell her, but she walked away with another guy.”
“Chase, what are you saying?”
There was another knock at the door.
“Are you expecting someone?” he asked.
“That’s Rance. Um, he’s here to pick me up for a date.”
Chase swallowed, and his gaze dropped to the floor.
She’d never seen him like this.
“Why did you punch him?” she asked softly.
He lifted his head, and those beautiful brown eyes bored into hers. “He said things about you. Things he shouldn’t have said. No one talks about you like that.”
Her Chase, always protecting her. Even when she told him to stay away. But what could Rance have said? He’d been nothing but a gentleman.
“What did he say?”
The knocking on the door grew louder.
“Ask Nick, he was there too. Thanks for the Band-Aids. I’ll let myself out so you can have that date.” He stood and moved past her.
“Chase, wait, there’s something I need to tell you.”
He kept moving toward the door. “Doesn’t matter. You have a date to get to.”
