As I’m clicking through my new emails, I hear the distinct sound of a bag slipping off a shoulder, the gentle whoosh of the strap getting stuck in the crook of an elbow. I glance at the clock on the corner of my monitor: 9:05. He’s late, right on time.
He pulls his laptop out of his bag, clicks it onto its dock. We don’t say a thing to each other: he knows I’m ignoring him, I know he knows I’m ignoring him. It’s a fun game we play. I catch a whiff of his soap right before a hint of coffee. He gently places a latte next to my keyboard, just like he does every morning. He gets it iced or hot depending on the season. He’s already put a straw in it but left the paper on top, because he knows how I am about germs. I pull it off and take a sip, letting out a long, dreamy, caffeinated sigh. “Good morning,” Adam says. It’s warm and soft. I can hear his smile. “It is now.” I swivel my chair around to face him and raise my cup. “Thank you.” “You’re welcome. They didn’t have vanilla, so I went with hazelnut.” Adam is a rare breed of attentive male; he remembers my birthday, he asks about my dog, and he knows exactly which flavor of coffee to get when my favorite one isn’t available. “You’re the best work husband ever.” He laughs and rolls his eyes as he pulls a file folder out of his bag. “For someone who’s so firmly single, it’s amazing that you’re able to manage even a work committed relationship,” he teases. “How could I not work commit to you? You bring me coffee every morning, you’re my lunch date most afternoons, and you’re the perfect secret Hangman opponent during long, boring meetings.” “Don’t forget handsome,” he adds. As if I could.
