What boulder have I been living under that Twist is the first book I've ever read from Kylie Scott? Seriously, my book buddies are gonna get an earful because wow! The writing was impeccable. The words flowed from the pages and right into my heart. The characters are real and so likeable that I couldn't help but root for them (and want to have a drink at the Dive Bar with them too).
I loved Alex. She is quirky and a bit of a loner but she also speaks fluent sarcasm and is a softie underneath her tough exterior. I liked that the first time I met her she was stepping waaayyyy outside of her comfort zone. Nerves all aflutter she puts on a brave face and killer heels and goes for it. And gets a cold dose of reality dumped on her and not just because of the rain. Oh that Joe Collins. He had a lot of explaining to do- if Alex would let him get a word in that is... A series of events (unfortunate or fortunate depending on who you ask) leaves Alex out of her element and gives Joe the olive branch he was looking for to try and make amends for his major error. I loved seeing the sweet and caring side to him. The way he cared for Alex when she was at her sun-shiney worst really endeared the beast of a bearded man to me- and Alex too. I most enjoyed how they pushed each other out of their comfort zone. Literally. It was in those moments when Alex and Joe's true character was revealed and their bond solidified. They got each other a way no one else did. When tragedy hits old habits come crashing back in. My heart went out to everyone- because this bunch is more than friends- they're family. And when something happened to one of them- it happened to them all. I will say that I didn't like how Alex just took what was thrown her way- it seemed a bit out of character for her. But I shouldn't have worried. Kylie Scott knew what she was doing. She gave me a love story unlike any I've ever read. It was full of humor, sass, sweetness and heart. That's not to say there wasn't any drama because there was plenty of that! But Alex and Joe were so uniquely them and I couldn't help but root for them to find some sort of happiness with each other. And now I can't wait to go back and read all about the other characters that I was introduced to because if they're stories are anything even remotely as fun and heartfelt as Twist, I know I'm in for a treat.
![]() EXCERPT:
“I wanted to talk to you a bit more about what happened between us online,” he said, his mouth a serious straight line. “How I came to use my brother’s profile.” Ugh. “I’m pretty sure I found out everything I needed to know last night.” “I didn’t mean to lie to you, Alex.” “Once is a mistake.” I crossed my legs, kicking my black leather bootie back and forth. So I was a little aggravated. Sue me. “Months’ worth of e-mails is not. You could have introduced yourself to me, Joe, told me who you really were. You chose not to. Christ, no wonder you kept putting off meeting. I should have known something was wrong.” “You’re right. I shouldn’t try to sell you excuses.” A big sigh from my “friend.” “Truth is, I’m not used to being the bad guy. Usually I’m the one cleaning up my brother’s messes.” “Lucky me.” ![]() Kylie is a New York Times and USA Today best-selling author.
