![]() Jake’s my best friend and first love. There’s just one problem—he belongs to my sister. I’ve been crushing on Jake for years, but never had the guts to tell him. One drunken night with my sister and two pink lines later, and he’s lost to me forever. She doesn’t care that I met Jake Ramirez first. That he and I were best friends first. That I fell in love with him first. Because what my sister wants, my sister gets. When she video-calls me and Jake accidentally walks by in the buff, something in me snaps. Transferring to a different college might seem like a copout, but I have to get away from Jake and my sister before I say or do something I’ll regret. In an act of desperation, I ghost my old life. For the next two years, everything is great—until I come face-to-face with Jake and his son, who my sister abandoned. Jake’s the new wide receiver at my school, and he wants nothing to do with me, which is fine because I plan to keep my distance. Except we’re thrown together in the most dire circumstances that bring back all those old feelings. They say everyone deserves a second chance, but my heart can’t handle breaking one more time. _ _ _ Second Down Darling is an angsty, friends-to-lovers, forbidden romance, featuring a sexy single dad who’s a down-and-out college football player and a nerdy girl determined to overcome her wallflower ways. It has major second chance vibes and lots of steam! Second Down Darling is a dual POV standalone in the USA Today-bestselling series Varsity Dads. 5 Heart Review by Lorena My 2nd book I've read by this author and I cannot believe I haven't read her before because her writing style is just so light, fun, sweet and just a pick me up when you're feeling down type of book. Jake and Charlotte were totally a swoony type of couple that you just couldn't get enough of and their chemistry, although may have felt unrequited by both due to immaturity and misunderstandings was totally worth the wait when it happened for them. Everything happens for a reason and theirs was because they just weren't ready for each other. Jake certainly grew up pretty fast when Asher came into the picture and Charlotte became a whole new person when she went M.I.A. But from the moment I sat at any chair with my kindle and kept reading this magnificent story I just felt all these little goosebumps all over with these two. I gushed throughout and rooted for them throughout the whole book. I knew from the start that they were perfect for each other. Lex Martin is a great storyteller and her sports romances are certainly my go to when I am feeling like a light read moment! 4 Heart Review by Ashley I confess that I haven't read the other titles in this series and I KNOW after finishing Second Down Darling that I have been missing out. The opening alone was a punch to the gut that had me rooting for Charlotte. I adored Charlotte. She was impossible not to like with her big and kind heart. The heart that had been trampled, unknowingly, by her best friend for years. Feeling desperate she does the only thing she can think of to try and save herself, take herself out of the situation. Flash forward a few years and she finds herself face to face with Jake in the most unexpected of places. And all the pain and anger and unanswered questions came bubbling to the surface. Especially from Jake. But it didn't take long for him to figure out all was not as it had seemed back then. It took a disaster and little convincing, but he got his best friend back. Only he found himself with some not so friendly feelings developing. Seeing the change in Jake was so satisfying. He was such a good dad (Asher made it easy) but with the way life had been to him, it affected his play and a chance at the future he dreamed of. And the way he handled Charlotte with compassion and care was all of her teenage dreams come true. But when a blast from their past came stumbling into the future they were building, everything got thrown out of balance. Trust me when I say Dakota is the worst! From start to finish Charlotte and Jake's friends to lovers romance was full of sass and angst and forgiveness and steam. I can't forget about the fun group of friends that added even more heart to the story. I can't wait to see what Lex Martin has in store for this team next!
