While it can be read as a standalone, I would highly suggest reading the other books in the series first as there are a lot of characters and connections that I was lost on. I'm not going to lie. I struggled with this one a bit. I found the connection between Stone and Jaggs a bit lacking. That doesn't mean I didn't like them together, I did. I just wanted more from them. I get that Jaggs had less than noble intentions when she worked her way into the Kane family's lives and that she had some strong feelings to work through when she learned the truth. However, the constant back and forth, with Jaggs letting Stone get close then in the next instant shutting down had me ready to shout 'enough already!'. I liked that Stone wasn't deterred by the way Jaggs kept pushing him away. He knew beneath that fortress of pain and fear was a woman who just wanted to be loved. It took a lot of patience and sharing of his own demons, but bit by bit, Stone got that wall to lower, And when she finally let it crumble all the way down, let Stone in, they both found a peace they didn't know they had been missing. Stone was complex and there was a lot of soul searching that happened in this book for both characters. I think my absolute favorite part was the birthday scene at the end where the whole family is together, just enjoying their happiness and sharing their love.
