 I remember the first time I saw Sutton Barnett in perfect detail- like a fragment of time suspended in front of my eyes. I remember his shirt- faded blue against tanned skin that had seen countless hours of the summer sun. Wet droplets peppered his shoulders from where his still wet hair had dripped onto the fabric. He rounded the bottom of the stairs, our eyes meeting for only a fraction of a second before he looked away, but it was long enough for me to know right then and there that nothing would ever be the same again. The characters just got my attention from the get-go and I absolutely could NOT put it down! Aspen ("Pen") has had a crappy life, and her current foster parents are the worst, let's not even got started on her foster brother. So she spends most of her time at her best friend's house, Remi. Remi is her safe-haven and he protects her like a sister, or at least that's how Pen sees it. But Pen has had major crush on Remi's older brother, Sutton since the moment she laid eyes on him. Too bad Sutton doesn't feel the same for Pen ... at least at this time he doesn't. Let's fast forward to when they're in their twenties now and they all head back home to attend Remi and Sutton's parent's renewal wedding vows and since Pen and Remi live in the same State, they head out together and they all meet back in Ohio. Well while out there, Sutton takes a girl, which he does just to get the "vultures" off his back but his intentions are neve to get serious with her. When he sees Pen, she invokes feelings in him that he never thought anyone could. The relationship gets complicated from this point on between them three and I was so confused as to who I was rooting for because as much as I wanted to hate Sutton, I couldn't. He seemed to bed perfect for Pen, but then again Remi has always been the one to be there for Pen no matter what. So I am so conflicted and I don't know what to think or who I'm rooting for at this point. Melissa Toppen did an excellent job with this first book and I certainly can't wait for the conclusion of Pen, Remi and Sutton's life. I am literally dying to find out what is going to happen (damn you Melissa)!! I have to say that I haven't read a book this damn good in such a long time like this one! AUTHOR BIO
