Picture
When a McKinney brother falls in love, powerful emotion and overwhelming desire are never far behind.

Two hearts locked away . . . Hannah Walker spends her days coaching children through injury and trauma, one therapeutic horseback ride at a time. She knows all too well how violence can change a child and leave scars that never heal. It’s easy for her to relate to the kids; what isn’t easy is the thought of facing her own harrowing past.

Millionaire playboy Stephen McKinney could use a little coaching himself. Five years ago he encountered his most horrible nightmare—and the nightmare won. No matter what he achieves, nothing can make up for that awful night . . . or so he believes.

Both desperate for a second chance . . . Stephen is used to getting what he wants. And he wants Hannah. So when she turns him down, he’s intrigued. What he doesn’t know is that her secrets will lead him to a place he never wanted to go again . . . to a side of himself he’s tried to forget . . . a side that would scare Hannah away from ever loving him. Now his only chance to win her trust is to bare his soul, risking everything he tried so hard to protect.

This is the story of Stephen and Hannah, a physical therapist who works with children with disabilities on her horse farm.  Stephen has been left broken from an event in his past.  He has buried himself in his work and the only kind of relationships he has entertained have been the 1 night kind of ones.  A chance encounter in a grocery store with Hannah, has him feeling things for the first time in aeons.  However, Stephen is reluctant to admit that his feelings have developed, and he keeps passing things off between he and Hannah as casual.  He discovers Hannah’s secrets and her pain, and he doesn’t know if he is the man to help her heal from her past.  He has so many of his own demons that he is facing, it seems near impossible that these two can save each other from the demons of their past.

What an amazing story – filled with  angst, heart break, an emotional read that will have you smiling

The character of Hannah is one that I truly loved.  In spite of everything that she has endured, she has turned her life around.  She was fortunate enough to find the healing power of animals, and in particular horses, and now she is sharing this with other children that have been hurt.   Hannah was so fragile and sweet, but at the same time she was also shown to be a tough woman with an indomitable will.   She loved unconditionally and even though she had endured this terrible thing, she was still this kind, considerate and amazing person.

Stephen when we meet him is a complete player, although he is taken with Hannah, it is clear to see that he has a really colourful past where the ladies are concerned.  However, as the book continues, we soon realise why Stephen has cut himself off emotionally from not only relationships, but also his family.  Stephen is HOT!  As are all the McKinney brothers, but he is also a man with a broken heart and a damaged soul.  I loved as the story progressed, you could almost see him healing from the hurts of the past. Although damaged, he was still this strong man, that would do anything for the woman he loved.

I am giving this book 4 stars.  I really enjoyed the darkness of this book, and the fact that it was juxtaposed with the sweet story of romance.  It was surprise read for me, because I hadn’t read anything by Claudia Connor before, but I am officially hooked and I cannot wait for the next book in this series.  I also hope that the Walker brothers might just get their own spin off series too.
