SynopsisMy fiancée’s death almost killed me. It’s been three years and I still can’t move on. Not with life. And definitely not with love. GoodreadsExcerpt
“She’s got a great ass, doesn’t she?” Remi’s voice whispers in my ear.
“I wasn’t looking at her ass, Remi. Fuck off.”
“Promises, promises.” She clucks her tongue at me and gives me a once-over. “You look like shit. Luckily, I brought you something to change into. And if you are a good boy, maybe I will share my pre-party tequila shots.”
“I don’t need to change.”
She laughs. “Oh honey, not only do you need to change,” she gestures at my body. “But you need to change.”
“Cute.”
“Here.” She thrusts a bag into my arms. “Put this on and make us proud.”
“What is it?” I look inside the bag and see a brightly colored shirt reminiscent of Magnum PI. “No.” I push the bag back at her.
“Would you quit being such a fucking pussy? It’s embarrassing.”
“If I’m such an embarrassment, then you won’t mind if I leave.” I turn to do just that.
She grabs my arm to stop me. “Oh, not an embarrassment for me. For you. And for Kat’s memory. That she loved such a grouchy self-righteous douche.”
“That’s low, Remi. Even for you.”
“You have no idea how low I can go, cupcake. Now go change your fucking clothes and stop acting like such a dick.”
I grab the bag and head for the restroom.
“Thank you!” she calls. I flip her off over my shoulder.
“You still suck at that.”
She’s right, I do. I can’t flip people off, my fingers just look funny. But the gesture makes me feel better anyway.
The board shorts fit fine, as do the flip-flops. But the shirt is tight around my arms and chest. I’ve been working out a lot. Anything to try to keep a handle on all this anger inside me. Otherwise I just feel like I will snap and do something stupid. And I’m almost positive I’ve hit my stupid quota for this lifetime. It’s why I'm on desk duty at work.
Again.
Good news is, if I flex at all, I’m going to Hulk out of this shirt and pop a button or two. Knowing that it’s Chance’s shirt, and that my chest is now more built than his, makes me smirk with satisfaction. Because he’s a cop and I’m a firefighter, and that competition is always waiting in the sidelines to rear its head. I ball up my other clothes in the same bag and head back out to join the others.
Remi is waiting for me in the near empty hall. She leans up and kisses me on the cheek. “Thank you.”
I nod.
“I don’t do this to torture you, you know,” she says. “I do it because I need you to be happy. I can’t handle this.” She motions to me.
I cock my head and raise my brows. Even though I’m sure I know what she will say.
“I promised her, Brad. Promised her when she was—”
“I know, Remi. Jesus.”
“No, you don’t, listen to me.” Her voice breaks and she pauses for a moment before continuing. “Yes, you know I promised her we’d watch out for you. And you haven’t let us do that. It’s been three years, Brad. Three years without my best friend. That’s a long fucking time. How do you think I feel when something makes me happy and she’s not here with me to enjoy it? I have so many fanfuckingtastic things in my life. And I want to be happy. But it’s hard when all I do is miss her. And then I look at you, and you have nothing to make you smile. And I can’t live like this. I can’t live knowing that I’m moving on without her and you aren’t. So, even if you won’t do this for you, do it for me. Do it so I can be a better mom to your God-kids. And a better wife to your friend.” She wipes at the tears rolling down her cheeks.
I take a minute to look at her. Really look at her. She looks amazing, as usual. But she’s right, there is a satisfaction about her I’ve never really paid attention to before. A contentment that becoming a wife and a mother has brought her. And she is the last person any of us ever thought that would happen to.
But along with that is a sadness, when she talks about Kat, it’s just not as prevailing as the other emotions. I pull her into my arms. “I’m sorry, Rem.” I clear my throat. “I forget I’m not the only one who lost her. I keep waiting to wake up and have it be better, for me to feel better, and it never happens.”
“I know,” she says into my chest. “All we can do is keep waking up each day and moving forward. Keep living. And on the days that its harder than others, we remember this is what she wants. As awful as it feels, she wants us happy and living life the best way we can.” She steps back out of my embrace.
I wipe at the tears on my cheeks and pinch at the bridge of my nose to get them to stop, then clear my throat again. “Thank you, Remi.”
“I love you, B. You know that, right?”
“Love you too, Rem.”
She kisses my cheek and turns to head down the hall toward the reception area and check-in for the auction. I stay put, trying to collect my thoughts enough to convince myself this is the right thing for me to do. That my promise to Kat to live my life, somehow balances out the betrayal I feel over doing so.

I’m in the office. How dangerous could that be?” “Pretty dangerous,” he said and kissed her mouth. Just as in the park, he felt the intense rush of desire and the kiss went from intimate, but appropriate in a public setting, to over the line in a matter of moments. Her arms pulled tight around his neck and she responded with equal heat. “I’ll be right there. I forgot to grab my stuff out of the break-room,” a woman’s voice trilled voice from the hallway. Why are you here?â I asked.â
Theoâs knuckle grazed my chin as a smile curled his lips. âTruth or promise?â â
I had a thought as he perverted the sweet game we used to play as teenagers. â
The thing between us was darkening, twisting, and I should run. Run before I darken and twist with it. I was the Wicked Bitch of the East Coast, but I wasnât the words they called me. Not really. I liked to pretend I was as callous as my brother Grayson, as cunning as my sister Gemma.â
In reality, I was soft. As they said, there was a reason Iâd never fit in. I was a marshmallow. Easy to step on. Easier to squish.â
So I answered. âTruth.ââ
Theo smiled, easy and slow. âIâm going to break your heart, and youâre going to thank me for it.ââ

I have been waiting for this book since I took my first trip to Sutter Lake. And let me tell you, Catherine Cowles did not let me down. Jensen and Tuck's friends-to-lovers journey was rife with emotion and had me hanging on every word. I'll admit I was a bit nervous going in but only because I didn't want anything else bad to happen to Jensen. She had been through a lot, most of it out of her control, but still found a way to push forward. She found solace in her work, her son and her horses. But when an unknown threat starts putting her and the things she loves most in danger, it was Tuck to the rescue. Oh Tucker. What a strong and protective man. I loved how every rule he set for himself got broken with Jensen. How he couldn't say no even when he tried. How he sacrificed his happiness to try and give Jensen what he thought was best for her (spoiler alert, it wasn't). How when everything was on the line, he didn't let anything stop him from getting to his woman. This book had me on edge from page one. Full of suspense, mystery, steam and danger, Beautifully Broken Spirit kept me up all hours reading. I had an inkling early on about who was behind all the mayhem and misery that was playing out. But as the story wore on, I doubted myself and was going in a totally different direction. Talk about heart pounding. I was torn between angry and anxious as everything unfolded and the evil doer was revealed. I should've trusted my first instinct- I was right. The journey that Tuck and Jensen take to finding love with one another is tender and downright touching. They way they battled the demons of their past to pursue their future together gave me belly flutters. And that ending! It was just perfect. My fingers are crossed that Catherine Cowles takes me back to Sutter Lake soon because Kennedy needs a book!
Excerpt “Hey, Little J.”My entire world seemed to tunnel as my vision went black, and my knees buckled. “Shit!” Strong hands caught me before I could hit the floor. I blinked rapidly as Tuck’s face came into focus. His expression was full of worry. “Are you okay?” He settled me into one of the café chairs. My stomach pitched. “I’m fine. Just got up too fast. You startled me.” Tuck’s brow furrowed. “The door was unlocked.” “Well, I thought I’d locked it.” Tuck let out a sound that was a cross between a sigh and a growl of frustration. “You need to be more careful. Anyone could’ve come in here, and you wouldn’t have even known. Just because we live in a small town doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take precautions.” I pinned him with a stare that should’ve had him taking a step back. “I know that. Believe me, I of all people fucking know that.” Tuck winced. “I didn’t mean it like that.” I waved him off. “I know.” I pushed up to stand, but the world turned wobbly again, and Tuck pressed me back into the chair. “Oh, no, you don’t. When’s the last time you had something to eat?” I tried to think back. I guess I had missed lunch. “A granola bar in the car on the way to drop Noah off at school?” This time Tuck did growl. “You need to take better care of yourself.” My skin prickled. “I take fine care of myself, you big behemoth.” “I’m not seeing a whole lot of evidence of that lately. You take care of everyone but yourself.” I opened my mouth to argue, but he kept right on going. “You stay right here while I go fix you a snack.” Tuck pinned me with a hard gaze. “You move a muscle, and I will paddle your ass.” My jaw came unhinged, but simmering heat pooled low in my belly. My hands fisted. What the hell? Before I could regain any semblance of the ability to speak, Tuck had turned on his heel and strode towards the kitchen. Had I actually hit my head? Was I now in some sort of coma-induced alternate universe where Tuck threatened to spank me? And why the hell did some part of me like the idea? I was clearly in some sort of hunger-induced brain misfire. That was the only reasonable explanation. I did all kinds of crazy stuff when I went too long without sustenance. Yes, those crazy things were generally something like eating an entire pan of brownies in one sitting. They weren’t typically the burning desire to climb one of my best friends since birth like a tree. But hunger could make you do lots of insane things. Tuck emerged from the kitchen juggling a plate with the largest sandwich I’d ever seen and a tall glass of what looked like apple juice. He came towards me with what I could only describe as a swagger. Had his hips always moved like that when he walked? Don’t get me wrong, I knew Tuck was attractive. Hot even. I’d had the requisite crush on him throughout my middle school years and even into high school. But he had always treated me like a little sister. Someone he liked hanging with. But never once had he given me even a single hint that he was interested in more than friendship. And I’d grown up. I’d put him firmly in the big-brother category. So, why, all of a sudden, was my body reacting to him? It had to be my dry spell. Could it even be called that if it was as dry and vast as the Sahara? I needed to get laid and stat. Because the last thing I needed was to fall for a guy who was a walking one-night stand.

Blaise wanted to memorize every detail.
Her blue eyes reminded him of the sky on a summer day, when flowers bloomed, the sun shone, and the dark, lonely nights didnât last as long as they did in winter.
He stared transfixed, connected to this stranger by an invisible force. Awareness thrummed through him. Staring was rude, but he couldnât look away from her.
Noises sounded. Muted footsteps. A door. A phone.
All Blaise could focus on was her.
Maybe this trip hadnât been such a bad idea. He couldnât remember the last time heâd been soâ¦intrigued.
She blinked. âCan I help you?â
Her voice was deeper than expected, a tad husky. Sexy. He wanted to hear her say more and laugh. He couldnât wait to hear her laugh.
She cleared her throat. âYouâre Blaise Mortenson.â
The woman didnât sound surprised. If anything, she appeared resigned.
Did that mean
Of course, it did. âYouâre Hadley Lowell.â
She nodded once.
His insides deflated. A strange reaction. One he would ignore.
Hadley eyed him curiously. âI thought you were too busy to come to San Francisco.â
âYes, but youâre the best matchmaker, so here I am.â

Blurb: “Tell me a happy something, Sutton.” I was only seven the first time Grady Bowen whispered those words to me. Cloaked by the black sky under a blanket of stars, it was easy to get lost. He didn’t have any good memories of his own, and needed to borrow mine. I’d willingly give him anything. Being infatuated with that boy was a beautiful curse. What could have been special didn’t get the chance to bloom. He’d never see me as more than his best friend’s kid sister. That was a hard lesson to learn, but not the most difficult. Grady had always been struggling against the odds. Eventually he quit fighting and let his family’s reputation own him. Try as I might, those influences were beyond my reach. He didn’t mean to break my heart. Or maybe he did. I shouldn’t have made it so easy for him. Either way, our wrongs against each other carved new lines between us. I went four years without seeing Grady—each one more painful than the last. That distance did nothing to dull my feelings toward him. But things are different now. Most noticeably is Grady. I barely recognize this man he’s become. And that’s the way he intends to keep it. Not that it really matters. Grady Bowen stopped being my happy something long ago. Excerpt: I take a closer inspection of this swoony charmer. Not an ounce of deceit registers in his expression. There’s no stony edge blocking his emerald stare. His ironclad guard is nonexistent. Zero inhibitions block the sliver of space between us. Everything is on display for me to see. I should be the one to stop this. He’s obviously not in his normal state and under the influence of hefty narcotics.Who the hell am I kidding? Basking in a rare smile from Grady is a gift I won’t take for granted. Appreciating from a safe distance will be the true challenge. I test my willpower by trying to evade the sneaky fingers inching up my thigh. But our skin is magnetized and moving is impossible. The golden specks in his eyes glitter at my failed attempt. Yep, he’s onto me. I’m a goner. As if there was another option. The itch to comb through his shaggy hair tickles my fingertips. Would he lean into my embrace if I cupped his jaw? The tiniest bit of resolve stops me from acting on those impulses. But it doesn’t stop my brain from working overtime. I wonder if anyone else has seen this side of him. The romantic in me wants to believe I’m the first, and hopefully only. I shove the fanciful notion aside. “Well, you sure seem to be in a great mood.” That luscious bottom lip gets trapped between his teeth. I’d love to take a bite. As if hearing my thoughts, Grady rolls toward me. “Abso-fucking-lutely. Why wouldn’t I be? I have a gorgeous woman within reach, ready to take care of my aches and pains.” This time I really do choke on my tongue. “W-what?” The hand he has on my leg drifts higher. “You sound shocked, Sutt.” How could I not be? “That’s an understatement.” “Stay with me,” Grady croons. “For the night?” “For always.” His gaze is smoldering. Damn, he’s sexy. And irresistible. I’m liable to straddle his lap and offer him everything. But the chains of our past hold me hostage. I can’t fall victim so easily. “Why now, Gray?” Whatever painkillers he’s on are proving to be an effective truth serum. I might as well use it to my advantage.
