This isn’t your typical story about boy meets girl, they fall in love and live happily ever after.  No.  This is a story about deception and betrayal at its finest. This is a story about hatred and attraction, which does everything in its power to destroy two people.

Essie Horton is a woman who has lived through unspeakable things during her short life, and when a prime opportunity presents itself, she dives right in, only concerned about herself and her objectives.

Drayden Warner is a man used to living the good life, bedding every beauty in sight, masking an empty existence, and hiding from a tragedy which happened years ago.  Little does he know, his life will change forever when he meets the one woman who will possibly destroy him for good.

Contact of any sort with him is dangerous. I want so much to be unaffected by him, to truly hate him, but I just can’t. I’m drawn to him on some weird level. I fight it, put on a good show, but in the end, he has this inexplicable power over me. And I think he knows it, too.

“What do you want?” I ask flippantly, aiming for indifference. He sits down in the chair and tugs me onto his lap. My arm rubs against his chiseled chest while his scent infiltrates my defenses.
Fuck. I’m in some serious shit here.
“When I tell you to do something, Essie, you best do it the first time I say or else.” His arm wrapped around my waist is holding me in place so I don’t attempt to get away from him. His other arm is running up and down my leg, his hand teasing my burning flesh.
“You are not the boss of me, Drayden. You can’t order me around and expect me to comply.” I’m trying my best to control my breathing. I can’t give way to the fact that my body is betraying me.
“I own you, Essie. For the foreseeable future, you belong to me and you will do whatever I say, whenever I say it. If you refuse, then there will be consequences.”
“What?” I say as I look at him with disbelief. “No one owns me, you bastard!” I struggle to get free but his punishing hold on me is too tight. “Let me go!” I shout.
“You can fight me, but I will always win. Always.” His hold remains strong, never wavering. There is no hope in getting away from him, not right now. My best plan is to remain still, let him do or say what he came here for and be done with it for tonight.
Ms. Nelson did an exceptional job with her debut novel. Two people who meet and come with secrets, lies deceit and betrayal. So much emotions and some mystery involved in this novel. I thought it kept me pretty entranced in the storyline and I really loved Essie’s strong character in this book. She was fearless and wasn’t afraid to go after what she wanted. Essie -- has lived a pretty rough life, coming from foster homes and pretty much raising herself after her last foster parent passed away. Now Essie just wanted to live a pretty decent life and she wanted an easy way to accomplish that – what way was that? She wanted to manipulate and blackmail a rich man. Dreyton – a wealthy businessman who pretty much always gets his way. He is very moody and reserved but his past is what has him this way. Essie is a beautiful woman and she knows it so she flaunts it. She catches Dreyton’s eye and BINGO! She thinks her plan will work and she’ll become a rich woman NOT! Dreyton is no fool. I guess Ms. Horton’s tactics did not work so well after all. She finds herself living in Dreyton’s home for unforeseen circumstances. Dreyton seems to detest Essie for trying to manipulate him and Essie starts falling in love with Dreyton. They seem to have this little war going on constantly bickering and fighting. They do have their moments when they get along, but for the most part they are at each other’s throats. Can two people who have pretty shady pasts let it go and move on? Can they work even after having deceit, lies and manipulations involved from the start? I kind of felt sad at times when I was reading this book, I thought they both had haunting pasts and it was hard for them to share their pasts with each other out of fear that it was going to make the other run once they found out the truth about each other. Essie started off with a pretty strong and confident demeanor and Drey was a pretty possessive guy, I didn’t get at first why he was so possessive of her when he constantly reminded her of how much he hated her for what she tried doing to him, but as the story kept unfolding, I started understanding what was happening. Total 4.5 stars for this read, I did like the whole story line and I really do love my alpha males in a book. I am really looking forward to reading more from this author as this debut novel was total thumbs up for me!
