Bad Penny by Staci Hart

Nothing good comes after the third date.

See, date three is the crucial point when things get real, which is exactly why I bounce out the door, twiddling my fingers at whatever poor boy I’ve left behind. Because if I stick around, one of three things will happen: he’ll profess his undying love, he gets weird and stalky, or I’ll go crazy. Like, Sid and Nancy crazy. Like, chase-him-through-the-streets-begging-him-to-love-me crazy.

Seriously, it’s better for everyone this way.

So when I meet Bodie, I figure it’ll be the same as it ever was. It doesn’t matter that he doesn’t put a single string on me. Doesn’t matter that he’s funny and smart and jacked and can play my body like a grand piano. Because even though I’m built for love, love has only carved me up like a Christmas ham.

Resistance is something I can only hang on to for so long, and he has persistence in spades. But my heart isn’t as safe as I want to believe, and neither is his. And the second I ignore my cardinal rule is the second I stand to lose him forever.

5 Star Review by Ashley

I'm still semi-new to Staci Hart's work- I've only read two of her other titles and the ones I have didn't include any of the characters in this book. So the Tonic crew is all new to me. Wow. Bad Penny came out of nowhere, grabbed me by the heart and didn't let go. I shouldn't be that surprised because this is Staci Hart, but there was something extra special in these pages.

Penny's character was so fun and brave and fearless in all she did. From her wardrobe to hair and tattoos, she was unapologetically her and it was so refreshing to read a woman that confident. But I also liked her insecurities and vulnerability because they made her that much more human. She lives her life by her rules- and her number one rule, no more than three dates. It was a more than pleasant but highly unexpected blast from her past that shook the foundation she had built for herself to live on.

Oh my goodness that Bodie!! I didn't see him coming at all. And neither did Penny. This sweet and nerdy and oh so sexy guy with his endless patience somehow managed to chip away at the steel fortress that was Penny's heart. That moment (you'll know when you get to it) just melted my heart. That moment changed them both- but fear is a funny thing and it worked against them both.

The blow up and fall out absolutely slayed me. I felt the ache in my chest. Just like Penny and Bodie. And as terrified as she was to admit it, Penny just wasn't herself without Bodie in her orbit. She tried, oh did she try to get back to her but it wasn't working. When she had her light bulb moment, I was waiting with baited breath to see just what she would do...

I can not say enough good things about this book. There was so, so, so much to love. Staci Hart's writing was fresh, sexy (like super duper with a victory lap sexy) and just so fun. Yet, it still managed to pack an emotional punch, too. Bad Penny pulled no punches. It made me laugh and swoon and want some salted caramel ice cream with a side of tattoo.

About the Author

Picture
Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life -- a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can't forget that. She's also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She's been a wife, though she's certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She's also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she's been drinking whiskey.

From roots in Houston to a seven year stint in Southern California, Staci and her family ended up settling somewhere in between and equally north, in Denver. They are new enough that snow is still magical. When she's not writing, she's reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.
