Olivia Reynolds lives a sheltered life. Daughter of the leader of their small community, she is treated like a princess, never allowed beyond the safety of the walls. When her father decides she must marry, she chooses the man she has secretly lusted after ever since she first laid eyes on him.

Dane Mitchell.

One of her father’s best men, Dane is as lethal is he is attractive, and Olivia is thrilled at the thought of being at his side.

Dane Mitchell doesn’t want to be forced into marriage. He is a soldier, a fighter, and has a bigger purpose in life. He doesn’t have the time to deal with a spoilt pampered princess such as Olivia, but owes his life to Evan, Olivia’s father. He accepts the marriage.

But that doesn’t mean he has to like it.

This is the story of a community that is struggling to survive behind a wall and secure in a castle.  The world has been overtaken and only a few humans remain.  They are protected by Evan and his team of guards/fighters.

Evan has raised his daughter Olivia to be the princess of the castle.  Most think she is spoiled, but she has learned how to fight and to defend thanks to the help of her best friend (and one of her father's guard) Sam.  She has also learned how to tend the wounded and often assists the doctor when the men return from being out from the castle.

One of the stipulations her strict father has put on her is that she is to marry as soon as she turns 21.  He allows her leeway to choose the man that she wishes.  It is a long standing prophecy that Olivia will give birth to a son who will save the people.

Olivia has always been attracted to Dane - of all of the men at the castle, he is the one that when she sees him, she feels butterflies.  She advises her father that if she is to marry, then Dane is the one she wants.  Her father is initially not convinced of the pairing as Dane is a fighter, which means he is often outside the walls of the castle.  Evan, does not want that life for his daughter.  He wants someone that will remain inside the castle and protect her, not someone that is sent on secret missions for extended periods.  Olivia is unrelenting though and insists that Dane is who she wants. Her father eventually relents.
