I devoured Checkmate: This is Reckless, my first book from Kennedy Fox. I'm still stuttering over what I just read. While I did find the wording to be a bit repetitive in some spots, it didn't take anything away from the story as a whole. In fact, the book was funny and sweet but also managed to really pull at my heartstrings. And I think that's because I connected with Courtney's characters so much... Always seen as one of the guys, not the incredible woman she truly is. Always there for her friends. Dedicated to her job. Sassy, sarcastic and hopeful even when the odds were stacked against her. Oh and lets not leave out that she is desperately in love with her best friend. Goodness. The things Courtney went through just to get Drew to look at her as something besides one of the guys. But when he finally did, le sigh...swoon. That man, and he is allllllll man, sure swept Court off her feet. Even if it drove her to the brink at the same time. While it was new and exciting for them both to learn this other side of each other, it was easy. There was no awkwardness or strange tension. It was playful, sexy and light. However, always lurking at the back of both of their minds was the dangers of Drew's job. He's a cop and everyday for him is uncertain. When a heart stopping moment makes Drew re-evaluate his priorities, it's all Courtney can do to keep him from sinking into herself. Just when I think it's all going to be alright, that Drew and Courtney are going to get back on the same page- WHOOP! NO! Enter the crazy ex who just can't let go! Holy mother of pearl- didn't see that coming. Gah! I can not wait to see what Kennedy Fox has in store for them in the next part of this duet.
