There’s a single defining moment within every skater. It lasts only a second. Two if you're good. Three if you’re really good. It’s the moment you’re in the air, your board somewhere beneath you, and nothing but wind surrounds you. It’s the feeling of being airborne. The sixteen-year-old version of me would’ve said it was the greatest feeling in the world. Then at seventeen, I had my son. And every single second became a defining moment. Even the ones that consisted of heartbreak when his mother left us. Seventeen. Single. Dad. That’s what my life became. Yet, every day, I managed to find that feeling of being airborne. Or at least I convinced myself I did. But I lied—to myself and to everyone around me. Until she showed up; Tanned skin, raven dark hair, and eyes the color of emeralds. You know what sucks about being in the air? Coming down from the high. Sometimes you land on the board and nail the trick. Then kick, push, and coast away. Other times you fall. You fall hard. And those are the times when it’s not as easy to get back up, dust off your pads and try again. Especially when the girl with the emerald eyes becomes your drug... And you become her poison. 4.5 Star Review by Ashley I'm gonna get this out of the way and then we can all move on...Kick Push is my first book from Jay McLean. But I am so glad that this was my first because it took me on a ride that left me hanging on for dear life and wanting more. I have so many hi-lights of the beautiful writing that pulled me into this story from the first chapter and read furiously through every angst filled page. Josh Warden- I loved this guy from the first time I met him as a nervous yet hopeful and then heartbroken teen and fell for him more and more as he waded the waters as a young adult and father. His devotion and love for his son, Tommy is so heart warming that I found myself smiling through every single one of their scenes together. Things really started to turn when he got a new neighbor in Chloe. It took me a while to warm up to her kind of like how it took her a while to open up to Josh. Thank goodness for Tommy because no one can resist his sweet innocence and he was the key to the start of something beautiful for both of them. Chloe and Josh together was something magical that I can't even put into words. He saw the world through her eyes. And he gave her feet to push out of her shell. But when the past comes back it leaves Josh reeling in the worst way. Everything that had been piling up on him comes out in a hulk-like tantrum. I got it- I felt his anger and despair. His hopelessness and confusion. This was a side to him I hadn't seen yet and I feared and loved it in equal measures. I won't get into all the gritty details of what happens after Josh's epic melt down but it was life changing- for everyone. Josh and Tommy learned just how many people they really had willing to go to battle with and for them. No one more than Chloe whose back story (when I finally got it) had me crying my eyes out. Big kudos to Jay McLean for not taking the easy way out with this one and giving Josh, Tommy and Chloe their HEA. For making their journey heartbreaking and hopeful and painful, just like life. I can not wait to get my eyes on Coast- the conclusion to Chloe and Josh's story because I need to know how this turns out- fingers crossed for some happy for these two!
