An obligation is a course of action that someone is required to take, whether legal or moral. At six years old, Myla was sent to a family her father and mother had chosen for her when they knew their time on earth was almost up. What they were unaware of was what they thought would be her safe haven would become her living hell. Kai has been watching Myla from afar since he took over the family business from his father and inherited the responsibility of keeping her safe. When word gets back to Kai that Myla is not only in danger, but that his assets are being compromised, he immediately jumps into action and does the only thing that can be done at the time by marrying her. Neither Myla nor Kai would have thought that something that started off as a farce would become the most important thing either of them could've ever done. Review by Amanda Obligation is book number 2 in Aurora Rose Reynolds Underground King Series. Although this book can be read as a standalone, characters from the previous book are mentioned, so if you don't want anything ruined for you I would definitely recommend reading the series in order. Myla’s biological parents knew their lives were about to be cut short, but before their deaths they made sure their beloved six year old daughter was placed with the family of their choosing. Myla’s had a perfect childhood and grew up with an amazing family, until her 16th birthday. After that her life changed in ways that she could never imagine, and as soon as the opportunity presented itself for her to leave she ran and never looked back. When Obligation starts, Myla wakes up in Hawaii married to Kai. He has saved her from a fate worse than death at her Seattle bakery and the only way he has to keep her safe is to marry her and keep her with him. He can offer her the protection and sanctity that she needs but only if he can keep her within his sights... and his bed. Initially unaware of the connections between their two families, Myla is eventually brought into the loop. Kai's mother was best friends with Myla's mother - and his dad was also close to her father. Kai's parents had promised Myla's parents before their death, that they would look out for Myla. Kai has taken this responsibility on to his shoulders. Kai needs the marriage to appear real to the rest of the world, so that they know Myla is under his protection, but soon the lines are blurred between what is pretend and what is real. Kai introduces Myla to his family and although initially hesitant, because she feels like she is betraying his family, she is again not sure what Kai is doing because of legitimate feelings or because of his obligation to her father. The passion develops fast and furiously between the two, however, after a night celebrating their marriage, Myla is poisoned. Kai knows that this has happened because she is seen as his "achilles heel", and decides that he needs to distance himself from her. He leaves a note and departs from the Island. Myla is devastated, but she is a survivor. As much as Kai has broken her heart, she knows that she has survived much worse than this. However, the danger has not passed for Myla, she is still under the watchful protection of Kai's men. However, as time goes on and Myla still hasn't received the divorce papers from Kai, she takes matters into her own hands and decides to start proceedings. Will Kai be in time to get back the woman of his dreams or has too much time passed? Will Myla's heart be beyond repair this time? Has Kai's sense of obligation cost him the one thing that he truly loves. I absolutely loved this book. I am giving it 4.5 smashing stars. The book is full of really emotional and quite heavy scenes, but in true Aurora Rose Reynolds fashion the characters are SIMPLY amazing. Kai is alpha to the core, he protects what is his and loves with his whole heart. Although he makes mistakes - he usually makes them thinking that what he is doing is best for Myla. Myla is one of my favorite characters that Aurora has written. She has been dealt quite a hand in life, but instead of succumbing to all the hardships, she has used them to learn and grow. I loved her strength, I loved how she loved Kai - I just loved everything about her. Obligation is definitely one of my favorite reads of 2015 thus far. I am so looking forward to Sven and Maggie's story - there is a sneak peek in the back of Obligation.
