Paradise Fought: Abel by L.B. Dunbar

I'm not a fighter.
I was born into a fighting family. As the middle child, I was overlooked in favor of my older brother.
He took the negative attention, too. In comparison, there's nothing special about me.
I’m not as big as Cobra. I’m not as strong as Cobra. He's the alpha.
I'm a beta.
The second son.
The lesser one.
The one never encouraged to fight, never encouraged to do anything, but stay out of my father’s way.

I'm not a lover either - but I wished to be – that’s why I needed her.
I met a girl in the pouring rain.
Sounds cliché, but it's true. It changed everything.
Because of love, I learned to fight.

Betas come second, but in this fight, my story is first.

4.5  Star Review by Ashley

If there is one thing I've learned from reading LB Dunbar's books its that no one, and I mean no one, can put a modern day twist on a tale like she can. Paradise Found: Abel is no exception. While there are some similarities to the story we all know, it is vastly different. Yes, there are the brothers and they have their differences to say the least but that is where the parallels end. So, take everything else you know about the story of Cain and Abel and throw it away.

I fell for Abel, the Betta right away. He was so down trodden but he never counted himself out. I liked his initial shyness and and awkwardness. He was nerdy but at the same time not. He hid himself behind his glasses, and collared shirts but underneath was a full fledged, one hundred percent, not to be messed with man. Complete with tattoos and a heart of gold. I love how he came into his own as the story progressed. He used the tools at his disposal to his advantage, even when the odds were stacked against him. And nothing helped and hindered him more than the object of his desire, Elma.

To say that girl is something else would be an understatement. She is fighting her own demons and most aren't of her own making. She isn't shy but has a vulnerability to her that makes her likable despite her flaws. She uses what she has to get what she thinks she wants. And when you learn what she's after it will leave your jaw on the floor (like mine was). Turns out, she was getting so much more than she bargained for when Abel muscled his way into her world. I love how off-kilter he made her. She always seemed so sure and planned but all is not as it appears. As luck would have it, Abel was the one with the master plan and he got everyone to play into it perfectly, until his feelings got involved.

Things spiral out of control fast when Abel's father works himself back into the picture. That man made me furious for the demands he was putting on his children. Yes, children. He got Cain involved in his hatred for his younger son. I'm sure you can guess what happens...yep, brother versus brother. Only this one doesn't quite turn out the way I thought it would. I felt every punch, kick, hold and grunt of pain. My heart was pounding as these two battled it out. Now, I won't tell you how it ends but in true LB Dunbar fashion, nothing is ever quite as it seems. While there is a winner to the fight, everyone loses something. But it's nothing compared to what Elma and Abel gain.

About the Author

Picture
L.B. Dunbar loves the original legend of King Arthur. Inspired by this classic tale, she pulled over to the side of the road to take notes when it hit her that if King Arthur lived today, he'd be a rock star. A lover of fairy tales, myths, legends, and anything with happily ever after, she loves to read and write contemporary romance. Her Legendary Rock Stars series is complete with the final tale: The Trials of Guinevere DeGrance, but the story began with The Legend of Arturo King. She also wrote The Sensations Collection, which includes five stand alones based on the five senses in a small town setting near Lake Michigan. Raised on one side of that lake, she grew up in Michigan, but now lives on the other side, in Chicago. Mother to four, wife to the one and only, and teacher to hundreds of former students, she looks forward to sharing more stories in the future.
