As the bus approaches my stop on the Lower East Side, I raise the hood of my black sweatshirt. Anonymity is key in my neighborhood—particularly as a lone female walking at night. All I want is to leave my crime-ridden shadow of a home in New York City. I’ve done everything I can to keep my head down and focus on my studies. College is my only goal; love has never been on the map… That is, until my sister brings me to an underground fight, where I meet a gorgeous and mysterious man: Vincent. He is the ghost in my shadows, showing up to feed me pieces of his upper-crust life, then evaporating into darkness until his next visit. I’m falling hard and fast. How can I trust him amidst the depth of his secrets? Vincent may be even more dangerous than the dark world I’m trying to escape. 4.5 Star Review by Ashley One of my favorite fellow book bloggers was raving about this book so I jumped at the chance to give Jessica Ruben's debut novel a whirl. Wowza! The opening sequence alone had a lump in my throat and put me on Team Eve. I really liked Eve. I admired her fighting spirit. How she was determined to be so much more than her circumstances. How hard she worked to not be a statistic. How one chance meeting stunned her stupid. Vincent- strong, , mysterious, bold, sexy, powerful. He wears his strength on his sleeve and isn't afraid of anyone or anything. Except what Eve makes him feel. The fact that she made him feel at all left him reeling. There was no denying their connection but neither one of them knew what to do with it. I loved that while Vincent was a fighter in the "ring", Eve was the fighter where it mattered- in life. It didn't hurt that she had a few amazing people helping her along the way. Her sister was an absolute light amidst all the heavy within the pages. When those two were together, Eve got to be a teenager and have fun- not constantly worry about keeping her guard up. However, when she was with Vincent, she let that wall crumble to dust. He had that effect on her. Now, there is a lot happening in this book but it was so well written that even with all the issues Eve faced, nothing got lost in the shuffle. And New York City was the perfect backdrop to all this chaos. Gritty. Raw. Dirty. Hopeful. And when Eve got that little glimpse of what the future could hold for her I finally let out that breath I had been holding since the beginning. And that ending..I had an inkling all along that something along those lines was coming but I didn't know it would come out that way! Gah! I am so ready to see what Jessica Ruben has in store for Eve and Vincent next!
