Book 4 in the Bestselling Storm MC Series by Nina Levine

BLOOD WILL BE SHED...

The ghosts of Donovan "Blade" Brookes' life are closing in on him.

Hardened by an abusive childhood and haunted by the murder of his fiancé, Blade struggles against the dark forces threatening to consume him.  When he helps Layla Reed in her hour of need, he has no idea she will be the light to his darkness.  As they spend more time together, he is powerless to fight his desire for her.  Powerless to fight his need for her.  However, as his feelings deepen, he pushes her away, reluctant to drag her into his world.  With enemies coming at him from all directions, Storm MC needing his help to fight off a rival, and his father still causing him grief, Blade needs the love of a good woman now more than ever.  Can Layla push Blade to the edge and get him to admit to both of them what he wants?  Or will the darkness pull him under once and for all?

Donovan "Blade" Brookes has lived a life that no one can be jealous of - the bastard son of an abusive MC President who treated his mother like a whore, the only attention he ever got from his father was through many rigorous beatings.  His father was mostly absent, choosing to live with his wife and their two kids.   This lead to Blade doing whatever necessary to survive.  He turned to a life of petty crime, which eventually became a life of more grievous and violent crime.

After a life shattering event forces him to change his ways, he cut ties (mostly) with the life of crime and pursued more legitimate enterprises.  This is the Blade we meet in Slay.  He is committed to his family, but refuses to make any commitment to anyone beyond those of his inner circle.

Blade is tough as nails, he is one of those guys that says a whole lot by saying almost nothing.  He is terrifying, but only as a result of all the awful things that he has seen and done.  I love the way this character was written, there was absolutely NOTHING soft or unrelenting about him.  He was all alpha male all the time and I loved that about him.  It was really great to read his relationship develop further with Scott.  I think Levine nailed all the idiosyncrasies of their new and budding brotherhood.  I hope that we continue to see them in further books becoming tighter and tighter - it is truly an aspect of this book that I loved.  Of course, Madison is also showcased in this book, and her love for her "lost" brother knows no bounds!  Yip, I pretty much love that whole family.. Maybe Levine will treat us to a final epilogue one day where we can see how they all end up.  I know there are plenty more Storm books to come before then though.

I loved the character of Layla Reed.  She comes from a privileged background where money was never an issue.  Layla has completely separated from that life and now runs a bar.  She is a woman after my own heart, in that she is  just so damn bad ass.  I love this about all of Levine's leading ladies, they are the epitome of the modern women with a whole lot of  sassiness thrown in.  They don't need anybody to do anything for them - they can do it all themselves (I love it).   Layla is also a nurturer though, she takes care of everyone that she considers part of her family.

This book is also written in dual perspective, which does seem to be more of the norm these days, so we are able to know where both of the characters are in terms of their head space.  I must say that although not initially a fan of this way of writing, it has won me over and I think it definitely adds to the telling of this story.

I think Blade's book is definitely the most anticipated (thus far) of the Storm series, and I can honestly say that Nina Levine surpassed expectations!  I am giving this book 4 stars and look forward to reading more of what the Storm MC have in store for us!
